Jewelry Classes

Your first question is probably "what will we be making?", "Can we play with fire?", Can I make something out of my grandma's old jewelry", etc. Well let's see...

What to expect:

We like to follow the lessons that were written down in Alan Revere's Book: 'Professional Jewelrymaking -  A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Jewelry Techniques' (ISBN #1929565429)

First skill:

Every great jeweler begins at the bench with a saw frame and a file. In this first lesson, you will learn how to accurately saw straight lines, curves, and intricate shapes out of sheet metal. This requires more than simply following a pencil mark—it demands rhythm, control, and a light touch.

You’ll start by fitting a blade into  your   saw frame correctly, with  proper  tension, and learn how to  lubricate  the blade to prevent  breakage. You'll  practice cutting on  brass or copper,  developing the muscle memory  needed for smooth, confident strokes.  From there, you'll  move to filing,  where you’ll learn  how to shape and  refine your sawed pieces using flat,  half-round, and needle files.

This lesson is about more than tools it's about developing an eye for clean lines, symmetry, and finish. Expect to practice a lot. These basic skills will be used in nearly every project going forward.

Second skill:

Texturing and Surface Finishing :Adding Character to Metal

Once you can shape metal with confidence, the next step is to explore its surface. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to apply a variety of textures to metal using hammers, burs, abrasives, and rolling mills. You'll experiment with hammering techniques on sheet metal to create organic, faceted, or dimpled finishes. You’ll use steel stamps and wire brushes to add patterns, and you’ll explore sanding and polishing techniques to control sheen—from a soft matte to a high shine.
The purpose of this lesson is twofold: to teach you how to manipulate surface finishes for aesthetic impact, and to help you understand how light interacts with metal. Texture adds dimension, hides wear, and often defines the style of a piece.

Third Skill:

Soldering – The Art of Joining Metal

The heart of jewelry construction lies in soldering, and in this lesson, you’ll learn how to join pieces of metal together seamlessly and cleanly. Using silver or copper,    you’ll become familiar with hard, medium, and easy solders, understanding when and why to use each. You'll prepare your joints properly by filing and fitting, then learn how to flux the area, place solder pallions precisely, and control your torch. The goal is to develop a feel for flame size, heat direction, and the moment solder flows—what Revere calls "the dance of the torch." You’ll practice sweat soldering, butt joints, and T-joints. Mistakes like overheating, firescale, or poor alignment will become part of your learning process. Mastering soldering takes time, but it is the  gateway to limitless  forms of construction. Each of  these  lessons builds on the last, preparing you to    fabricate real jewelry with structural integrity and  professional finish.   As Revere emphasized throughout his work: good techniques leads to good designs
